Tonbridge Road Closure

Thank you for contacting the A21 Tonbridge to Pembury Inbox regarding the closure of Tonbridge Road.

As you are aware we will be closing the existing Tonbridge Road on the approach to the Longfield Road roundabout, including the roundabout itself. Road users will be able to travel along the new slip roads and the new roundabout, both of which are currently being constructed and are located to the west of the existing carriageway – please refer to the attached sketch for the planned layout.

We have been working with Kent Police, Kent County Council and Pembury Hospital and we have agreed with Kent County Council for them to re-programme the traffic lights that are located at the A228 / Tonbridge Road crossroads in order to steady the throughput of traffic onto the A228.

We will be publicising this closure through forthcoming scheme updates and display boards at Pembury Hospital.

Currently road signs indicate closure between 20th August and Spring 2017

Further delays on the finishing of the road works reported by the BBC: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-38104273

Cricket Club Evolving!

Cricket has been played in the village for well over a hundred years, and the Chalket Lane ground has historically been one of Pembury’s hidden gems!

The club has a long and proud tradition, and the current membership benefit from the huge amounts of time and effort put in by the loyal voluntary servants of the club over many years. The legacy to this day has provided an excellent pavilion, and a playing square to be proud of.

Saturday’s see the club field two sides in the Kent Regional League and our Sunday XI play throughout the summer against a variety of rival clubs and villages. This has proved to be an excellent place to nurture the talents of young and aspiring players together with those wishing to play in the more convivial atmosphere away from league cricket, this gives the team an enviable harmony of both youth and experience in a welcoming and social environment suitable for all.

Midweeks also see us field a competitive T-20 side in the peak of the summer, which in addition to the fast paced cricket, produces some great social nights.

Promoting and encouraging junior cricket has a huge emphasis placed on it at Pembury, and we have recently developed an exciting linkup with Invicta Cricket Coaching to complement our existing coaching setup. From January to April we coach school age groups Yr5 to Yr10 at the excellent facilities at Tonbridge School, and from May to August ages 7 and over up at the ground.

Embracing the village community is an essential ingredient to a successful club, and we are indebted to the many local residents and businesses that continue to support us, this not only helps maintain the high standards at the club both on and off the field, but enables us to plan for the seasons ahead.

We are particularly keen to welcome new players of all ages and abilities (junior and senior) as well as social members to come along and enjoy the comfort of our facilities and further develop the atmosphere in the club.

If you are interested in joining us, or are keen to find out further information, please don’t hesitate to call Richard Dawes (07827 909489) or Andy Weaver (07714 693997) e-mail the club at PemburyCC@gmail.com or look us up at http://pembury.play-cricket.com. We will be delighted to hear from you.

Roll on the summer!

Mayor’s Christmas Toy Appeal 2015

The 2015 Tunbridge Wells Mayor’s Christmas Toy appeal starts on Saturday 14 November.

Each year the Toy Appeal ensures that disadvantaged children in the borough receive Christmas presents donated by individuals, schools and businesses. A team of volunteers coordinate the gifts, carefully selecting them so they are age-appropriate for the child and beautifully wrapped. Without the Toy Appeal some children would not have any presents on Christmas Day.

Last year donations of new and nearly new gifts helped over 260 local children have a happier Christmas. Donations of new or as-new gifts are needed to ensure this year’s appeal is equally successful. Gifts do not need to be wrapped.

The appeal runs until Saturday 19 December, donations can be left at various points in the borough including Tunbridge Wells Museum & Art Gallery, Weald Sports Centre, Cranbrook, Southborough Library, Pembury Library and Barsley’s in Paddock Wood.

The volunteers organising the appeal politely request that no candles or cuddly toys are donated. If anyone needs an idea for a suitable gift they can find inspiration from the gift tags on the Giving Trees in the Assembly Hall Theatre, Royal Victoria Place, Trinity Theatre and Tunbridge Wells Gateway.

Remembrance Sunday in Pembury.

There will be a service at 10.30am, St Peter’s, followed by a parade to the war memorial in Hastings Road.

For the Fallen

With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres.
There is music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
They sleep beyond England’s foam.

But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night;

As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain,
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.

Poem by Robert Laurence Binyon (1869-1943), published in The Times newspaper on 21st September 1914.
